Colorbound is a puzzle platformer in which you change color to progress.

Game jam rating note: if you're in a hurry, and you get stuck on a level, open menu (esc) and exit level, then go to the LEVELS menu to try other mechanics :)

Colorbound uses cookies to store your progress if you play in browser. If you experience issue with this, please try to download the executable version.

Accessibility

Colorblind mode can be enabled in the settings, and uses the ColorADD system.

Input methods supported:

  • Keyboard (A-D space or arrows) - this is the best supported option
  • Gamepad (left stick or D-pad, A (Xbox) to jump) - all buttons are not supported in all browsers, only downloaded executable guarantees compatibility
  • Touch input (on touch-enabled computers and mobile devices) - the size of the controls can be changed in the settings

Known issues

  • In-browser game may take several reloads to work properly
  • Portals can be buggy. They're a last-day addition.

Gameplay

You do not need to read this to play. However, if you're stuck, it might help!

In Colorbound, you can stand on platforms which have the same color as you, or one related to yours. Here's a quick reminder on color synthesis (see screenshots):

  • Orange = Red + Yellow
  • Green = Yellow + Blue
  • Purple = Blue + Red

What this means is that if you're red, you can stand on orange, red, and purple platforms. If you're purple, you can stand on red, purple, and blue. Feel free to play around the introduction levels until you're familiar with this concept.

The exception is white: generally, if you're white, you don't interact with anything. But also, whatever your color is, you will interact with white elements.

Here's a quick rundown of what elements you may encounter in-game:

  • Platforms. You can stand on them. Some of them move, at different speeds.
  • Switchers. They allow you to change colors. It'd be boring otherwise.
  • Walls. Like platforms, but vertical. If you're red, a red wall will block you.
  • Buttons. They're linked to doors, a door can have multiple buttons, sometimes far apart. Some buttons stay pressed longer than others.
  • Elevators. Or exit doors. The thing you have to reach to complete the level. They're special, because you have to be exactly the same color to open them.
  • Spikes. Don't step on them, or be prepared to try again. And again.
  • Checkpoints. They register your position and color, so that trying again is less frustrating. Slightly.
  • Portals. You know. Speedy thing goes in, speedy thing comes out.

This game is so good and funny. It utilizes colors so good. Nice work.
